Question and Answers

Q:

maytag washer model no mah4000aww

A:

Hi Mike,

Thank you for submitting a question to Manage My Life. I know how frustrating it can be when appliances do not function properly.

I do not understand what your mean by, "My washer start button goes for 40 sec and shuts off". I will need a few more details about what your washer is doing. Does the washer fill or start to fill? Does your washer make any unusual sounds?

This is a complicated washer and is very hard to diagnose, I highly recommend having a trained service technician evaluate this problem. You can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

I suspect a communication problem between the motor, the motor control board and the machine control board. You can check the motor and motor control system by removing the JP4 connector on the motor control board. Always unplug or de-energize electrical equipment before removing covers or attempting service. Be careful and wear appropriate hand protection when working around sharp metal parts. Set the timer dial into delay cycle and then press the push to start switch. If the motor operates and the washer goes into a 50 rpm tumble, then the source of the problem is not the Motor or the Motor Controller, but lies elsewhere.

The remaining checks will require the use of an ohm/volt meter and you will have to perform ohm checks and/or live voltage checks. If you have a meter and are confident in your ability to safely perform these checks, reply to this post and I will be happy to assist you in any way I can.

Here is a link that you may use to view the parts list diagram and for parts purchases; Sears Parts Direct .

I hope this is helpful. Check the things I have covered here, and if I may be of further assistance as more details become available, please reply to this post.

Thanks again for using Manage My Life.

Q:

maytag neptune washer MAH4000AWW very loud spin noise

A:

The loud noise during the spin cycle is almost certainly caused by a bad spin bearing in the back of the outer tub. I see your concern regarding the price of this part. Since the washer is at the end of its average useful life (about 10 years), I recommend that you consider replacing the washer instead of repairing it. There are new models of front load washers by Kenmore, LG and Samsung that have a direct drive motor. The rotor is attached directly to the shaft of the spin basket. This puts less stress on that rear bearing than the belt drive models. I recommend that you consider a direct drive front load washer when you replace this belt drive model. Here is a link for one example of a Kenmore direct drive front load washer at a good price: Kenmore White High Efficiency 4.0 cu. ft. Capacity Front Load Washer Model 49032 .

The information about the thermistor on the water valve assembly is shown in the image below. The physical location of the thermistor is shown on the parts drawing at the bottom of the image. It is circled in red.

There is not a specific resistance provided for the thermistor in the service manual or technical information for this washer. The test for the thermistor is described below. It should show a difference in resistance at the different temperatures. There is a chance that the washer can add warm/hot water if the temperature of the cold water is too low even in the cold setting. I don't have the specifications for water temperature in this washer. If the temperature of the fill water in the cold setting is obviously hot, then you could have a failed thermistor or a bad control board. You could try to fix this problem by replacing the fill valve assembly but this part costs about $100.

If you need more help, submit additional details and we will assist you further.

Q:

Maytag Neptune model #MAH4000AWW: Spin cycle not working.

A:

A number of different failures could prevent this washer from spinning. You could have a problem with the door lock assembly, the balance detection system, the timer, the machine control board, the motor control board or the wiring harness for the washer. A service technician will normally need to diagnose and repair this type of problem. Advanced checks are needed to diagnose the cause of this spin failure. The serial number of the washer will affect the diagnosis and the parts that are needed for repair. The serial number contains a revision number for the washer that indicates which components that it has. That is why I recommend that you have a service technician diagnose and repair this washer. Here is a link for the Sears Service website: Sears Home Services .

Your details indicate that you already replaced the timer. This tells me that you would prefer to fix this washer yourself. Even though I recommend that it be diagnosed and repaired by a service technician, we can still provide additional technical assistance to you. We need to have the full serial number to provide accurate technical information for this model. Reply with that serial number and we will give you some technical issues to check. Be sure that you follow electrical safety guidelines when working on this washer. Unplug the washer when accessing internal components.

Since the "Door Locked" light is not illuminating, the door lock assembly is your likely failure. I provided technical information regarding the door lock assembly in the image below. UNPLUG the washer and check that component using the information shown below. I provided a low voltage (DC) check for the control board. I assume that you can access the control board since you replaced the timer. Be sure that you UNPLUG the washer while access internal components. If you are comfortable with performing the voltage check, then you can check that circuit from the control board. Use EXTREME care when conducting that voltage check. Avoid making contact with any bare wires while you have internal components exposed. Unplug the washer as soon as the test is complete. If you are not confident that you can safely conduct that voltage check, I recommend that you skip it. You may not need it depending on the results of the other checks that are provided below. These tips may help you fix the washer. You can order parts from the Sears PartsDirect.com website (see link below). The door lock assembly parts will not be affected by the Series (serial) number. If you need more help, reply with additional details.

Estrella Argon de Torres: You should be able to see Lyles answer in the thread above. If not; paste and copy the URL below in your browser and you can see Lyles answer. If the door is not locking, it could have a faulty wax motor in the door lock assembly or it could have faulty electronic control board inside the control panel. I highly recommend calling a service technician to properly diagnose and repair your washer. You can schedule service online with Sears Home Services or by calling 1-800-4-MY-HOME. http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/questions/229829-maytag-neptune-model-mah4000aww-spin-cycle-working
