Question and Answers

Q:

Why does my Whirlpool dryer model #LER7620KQ0, run but does not heat?

A:

If you are comfortable working around live electricity, I recommend checking the voltage at the outlet using the image below.

  • Always unplug electrical appliances when removing the covers, or attempting service.
  • Be careful, and always wear gloves when working around sharp metal parts.
If you only have 1 leg of 120 volt power at the outlet, then you will need an electrician to resolve your outlet problem.
  • If the voltage is okay, check the resistance of the heater element by putting one lead of your ohm meter on one side of element and the other lead on the other side. You should measure between 7 and 12 ohms of resistance across the leads of the heater element.
  • You will then need to make sure you have 120vac down to both sides of heating element. To do this you will need to disconnect a wire from one side of heating element. Then with dryer running, check each side (of heating element and wire you removed) to a neutral wire. You should get 120 volts to each side. If not, there is an open component in that side of the heating circuit. On the L2 side it would be the centrifugal switch in the motor. On the L1 side it could be the thermal cut off, operating thermostat, or high limit thermostat.
If you need further assistance, please resubmit question with results of the checks I have given you.

Q:

How do I access the belt and motor on my Whirlpool dryer?

A:

On this model of dryer, you will need to remove the front panel to access the motor. You indicated that you already lifted up the top panel. The procedures in the images below describe the process for removing the front panel (and the belt if necessary). Be sure to unplug the dryer to completely disconnect electrical power before beginning this procedure.
