Q:

Inner burner of dual burner does not work on GE Cooktop.

A:

You could have a bad element, a wiring failure or a defective infinite burner switch that would prevent that inner portion of the element from heating. I posted a strip circuit diagram of the right front burner in the first image below. The circuit for that inner portion of the element is traced in orange and purple (probably the actual wire colors). You can unplug the cooktop or shut off the house circuit breakers for the cooktop to completely disconnect electrical power and check the resistance through that circuit from the burner switch using a volt/ohm meter. You should measure around 58 ohms of resistance through that circuit.

If you measure OL -- open load or infinite resistance then you either have a wiring failure or a bad radiant surface element. You can check the element using that same diagram (with power still disconnect to the cooktop). If that element is bad, then it will need to be replaced. If the element is okay, then you will need to check the wiring.

If you measure the proper resistance through that circuit then the infinite burner switch is apparently bad.

You can order parts from this page: GE Cooktop Model JP989SK1SS Parts . Be sure that you unplug the cooktop or shut off the house circuit breakers for the cooktop before accessing internal components and replacing parts.

The 2nd through 8th images below show how to access components in this cooktop.

I hope that this information helps. If you need more assistance, reply with additional details.

If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link: Sears Home Services .
