Question and Answers

Why does my Whirlpool dishwasher intermittently stop with the normal light blinking?

Make sure that the door is closing properly. A problem with the door switch can cause the dishwasher to stop in the middle of the cycle but it will not normally cause the rinsing and normal lights to blink. A blinking light on an unresponsive console usually indicates a stuck button on the control keypad. The stuck button is normally the one that it blinking. A bad keypad console will often cause this problem. This failure can sometimes be caused by a failed electronic control board. A technician will normally shut off the breaker for the dishwasher and test the console keypad using the matrix chart shown in the image below. To test the Normal Wash key, the technician would unplug the ribbon connector from the keypad that is plugged into the electronic control board. The continuity between Pins P1-13 and P1-4 would be checked. With the key not depressed, this reading should be open (infinite resistance). With the Normal Wash Key depressed, this resistance reading should be near zero ohms (closed). If the reading is closed in both conditions, then the key is stuck and the keypad would need to be replaced. An intermittent problem can be difficult to detect.

If you have a volt/ohm meter, you can try checking the keypad when the dishwasher freezes up and the light are blinking. If the keypad is okay, then the electronic control board would need to be replaced. Excessive temperature or moisture could affect the electronic control board or the console. You may be able to continue using the dishwasher for a while if you avoid the high temperature cycles.
