Question and Answers

Q:

How do I replace the water spout tube in the door of my Whirlpool refrigerator model GS5SHGXKS00 that spills water on the floor when used?

A:

The diagram for your dispenser on your freezer door is shown in the image below. Unplug the refrigerator before beginning this repair. Follow these steps to replace the water tube and spout in the dispenser:

  • Turn off the washer supply to the refrigerator.
  • Unplug the refrigerator.
  • Remove the bottom front grille on the refrigerator.
  • Disconnect the water line as shown in the image below. Push the collar in on the fitting and pull the tube out to disconnect it.
  • Remove the drip tray (Key 9) from the dispenser.
  • You should see two screws (Key 26) at the bottom of the front dispenser housing cover (Key 21). Remove these screws and carefully pull the cover off of the dispenser. If no screws are present, you will need to pry the cover off.
  • Remove the screws (Key 22) from the control bracket (Key 15). Pull the control bracket out to access the dispenser lever.
  • Remove the screw (Key 22) from the water fitting assembly with the water tube attached to it (Key 10).
  • Carefully pull the water tube out through the front of the panel and replace it with the new one.
  • Connect the water tube to the fitting in the grille area.
  • Reassemble the refrigerator in reverse order and check for leaks.

Q:

I have a Whirlpool refrigerator model GS5SHGXKS00 and the ice maker isn't working. The water dispenser is working but in low pressure. What should I do?

A:

I recommend that you pull out the water filter that is in the bottom front grill of the refrigerator. The housing for this filter has an automatic bypass so the water system will work normally when this filter is removed and it will not leak. See if the water pressure and flow from the dispenser significantly improves with the filter removed. If it does then a clogged water filter could be causing your ice maker and water dispenser problems. Replacing the filter may fix both failures.

If you still have problems with the ice maker, check the fill tube that protrudes into the freezer. You may need to unplug the refrigerator and pull the ice maker off of the wall in the freezer to access this fill tube. A low flow condition could have caused this fill tube to freezer. Defrosting it could resolve your ice maker problem.

If the water pressure and flow from the dispenser does not improve when you remove the water filter, I recommend that you shut off the water supply and remove the water supply line on the back of the refrigerator. Place the end of this supply line in a bucket and briefly turn the water supply cut-off valve on to check the water pressure and flow from this line. If the water supply pressure and flow from this line inadequate, then you will likely need to have a plumber fix this problem. If the water supply is good, then you could have a clog in the internal water system in the refrigerator.

If you need more help resolving this problem, submit additional details and we will assist you further.
