Q:

Whirlpool Gold Electric Stove Top MDL# GJC3034RB01 SN# XT0514479 Two cooking areas don't turn on to heat up.

A:

First, check to see if the "element on" light illuminates when the burner switch is turned on for the elements that don't work. If the "element on" light does not turn on then the most likely failure is a bad element switch. The procedure for opening the cook top is shown in the second image. Be sure that you shut off the house circuit breaker for the cook top before accessing internal components. You can order parts from the Sears PartsDirect website.

If the "element on" light does illuminate when those burner switches are turned on then you could still have a bad burner switch or you could have a bad element. A wiring failure could also prevent those burners from heating.

I provided a wiring diagram for this cook top in the first image below. The bottom of the second image shows how to test the components on a similar cook top. You can use that general information to check the elements in and the burner switches on your cook top using a volt/ohm meter. Make sure that you have the house circuit breaker shut off for the cook top when accessing internal components. If you have a bad element (measure "open" or infinite resistance) then the element will need to be replaced. If the burner switch does not properly "close" the contacts to send L1 or L2 voltage to the burner, then you will need to replace the burner switch. If the burner switches and elements are all okay, you will need to examine the wiring.

These tips may help you diagnose and repair this problem. If you need more assistance, reply with additional details (such as which exact burners are not working).

The level of difficulty for this repair is medium if you are able to read and use the wiring diagram shown below.

Q:

Whirlpool Oven MDL# RBS305PRS00 SN# XT0905945 Top heating coil not working.

A:

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

The broil element can be taken out and tested for resistance using an ohm meter. NOTE: Locate the two house circuit breakers dedicated for the oven and flip both circuit breakers off before removing the broil element.

Turn the bake element on and confirm the right two circuit breakers have been flipped off before removing the broil element.

To remove the broil element:

  1. Flip the house circuit breakers off dedicated for the oven.
  2. Remove the oven racks.
  3. Remove the screws securing the broil element to the oven wall and the two screws securing it to the ceiling.
  4. Pull the element out slowly and disconnect the two wires from the element terminals. Pull on the metal connector and not on the wire.
I added a YouTube video showing how to test the broil element using an ohm meter. The broil element should measure between 17-20 ohms of resistance.

If the broil element tests Okay, the electronic oven control board has most likely failed. The electronic oven control (part #8303885) cost approximately $252.00 and the broil element (part #9760771) cost approximately $41.00
