Q:

How can you get to the heating element and thermostat on a Maytag dryer?

A:

The front panel will need to be taken off in order to access the heating element. There are two (2) screws located near the bottom of the front panel to remove. Tilt the bottom of the front panel outwards and then pull it down to remove. See images below. NOTE: Disconnect the power cord from the power source before removing the front panel.
