Question and Answers

Q:

lawn tractor doesn't start. I out in new battery and it started. A week later the battery was dead and had to jump start the tractor. What would cause this?

A:

If the ignition switch were left in the run position the battery would be drained in a week.

If the ignition switch was in the off position, something in the tractor would have to be shorted to cause the battery to drain.

You can test the charging system of the tractor by measuring the voltage across the positive and negative terminals of the battery with a volt meter. A good, fully charged battery will read 12.6 volts dc or more. Start the engine and set to full throttle. Measure the voltage across the positive and negative terminals and if the charging system is working, you should read 13-14 volts dc. If the voltage is less than 13, something is wrong with the charging system or the wiring between the engine and the ignition switch.

Q:

My Craftsman Tractor with a Kohler model number CV14S keeps dying. I changed the plug, oil, and the fuel filter.

A:

If the engine dies intermittently there is no telling what your problem is. I recommend you get a technician to check the tractor out.

If the engine runs 30-45 minutes and dies replace the fuel cap.
