Question and Answers

Q:

burner won't lite

A:

You should see the igniter glowing when you start most models of dryers in a heated dry setting. Sometimes the glow of that igniter is difficult to see. You may need to turn the lights off in the laundry room so that the space is dark in order to see that glow. Some dryers have an observation port on the left side of the front panel just under the door. If you see that port on your dryer, pull the cover off and look through that hole to observe the igniter and the gas burner assembly.

If that igniter is not glowing, then you may have a blown thermal fuse. A number of other failures will prevent that igniter from glowing. I recommend that you reply with the model number of your dryer. Once we receive that information, we should be able to help you with some specific troubleshooting and repair advice.

If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link: Sears Home Services .

Q:

Why won't my dryer igniter lite up?

A:

I added the wiring diagram and instructions how to diagnose the failure. I recommend checking the radiant sensor (key#48) first for continuity and then the thermal fuse (key#59) and high limit thermostat (key#43) for continuity. In order for the igniter to glow red the control board must send 48 volts DC to the coil side of the heater relay in order for the heater relay to close and send voltage to the thermal fuse and high limit. The thermistor (key#42) can also prevent the igniter from operating too if the resistance is not within normal operating range.
