Question and Answers

Q:

where are the fuses in a GE Spacemaker XL?

A:

There are typically several internal fuses in the microwave but these are components that should only be accessed by a service technician.

The nature of your question indicates that the microwave may not be powering up. If this is the case, here are some tips that may help:

  • Make sure that the microwave is properly plugged into the outlet (usually in the cabinet above the microwave).

  • Check the house circuit breaker for the outlet that the microwave plugs into to make sure that it is not tripped.

  • Plug a small lamp or appliance into the outlet for the microwave to make sure that the outlet is working.

If these tips don't help, then you will likely need to have the microwave serviced. Microwaves are inherently dangerous to service due to high voltage components that can retain a lethal electrical charge even when the unit is completely unplugged. The microwave must also be checked for microwave leakage following any internal component repair. These are the reasons that a technician should complete any internal component repair (including internal fuses) on a microwave. NOTE: It may be more economical to replace the microwave instead of repairing it.

Q:

Why won't my GE XL 44 gas oven light?

A:

Without a model number, I will only be able to provide general troubleshooting and advice for this problem. When you set the range for baking, you should hear a relay click on the electronic range control board. It will be the same type of click that you hear when you set the range to broil. If you do not hear this click of the bake relay, then the electronic range control board is bad and will need to be replaced.

If the relay does click, then your likely failure would be one of the following:

  • Failed glow bar igniter
  • Defective safety/gas valve
  • Wiring failure between components
I recommend calling a service technician to diagnose and repair these types of failures.

If you want to attempt this repair yourself and you need more help, resubmit your question with the full model number of your GE XL 44 Spectra range.

Q:

Why won't my GE XL 44 gas oven light, even using a lighter?

A:

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

Any range or oven that uses a glow bar oven ignition system can not be ignited with a match or lighter. The electronic glow bar igniter must glow red hot plus it must pull enough current/amperage to cause the oven gas valve to open. I added an image below with the ignition theory.

If the glow bar igniter is not glowing, it could have a broken bake igniter or a faulty electronic oven control. The igniter can be disconnected and tested for continuity with an Ohm meter. If it does not measure any continuity or resistance, replace the igniter. If it measure continuity/resistance, replace the electronic oven control if there are no loose or bad wire connections between the igniter and the electronic oven control.

The bake igniter #WB13K04 for GE gas range model JGBS20GEV3WH can be ordered from Sears Parts Direct.

If the igniter is glowing, the igniter is likely too weak to cause the oven gas valve to open.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .
