Q:

How do I find the sock (or whatever) the washing machine has "eaten" and causing a loud banging sound during the spin cycle?

A:

Although you could have a sock or other item stuck in between the spin basket and the outer tub of the washer, this type of problem is often caused by a broken spin basket or a bad tub bearing on the back half of the outer tub. Removing the spin basket would require an almost complete tear down of the washer. A service technician will normally need to perform this type of procedure. Here is some information that may help you regarding this problem:

Make sure that the washer is level and that all 4 feet are resting firmly on the floor. Press down on the diagonally opposing corners to check for play. If the washer rocks even slightly, then you will need to adjust the leveling legs to eliminate this play. Instability in the leveling feet could cause a banging noise and vibration during the high speed spin mode.

If the spin basket is bad, it would be covered by a limited lifetime warranty for the part but you would have to pay for the labor to have the Sears Service Technician diagnose and repair the problem. With the washer empty, you can check the spin basket by opening the door and pressing up on the front, top edge of the spin basket to check for play. Rotate the basket a few degrees and continue to check for play between the basket and the outer tub through the whole 360 degrees around the basket. If you find an area around the basket where you are detecting significant play (upward movement in relation to the outer tub) then a support vane on the back of the basket is likely broken and the basket would need to be replaced. The back half of the outer tub that has the spin bearing pressed into it may also need to be replaced in this situation. Although the spin basket part would be covered, the labor would likely be about $150 and the cost of the back half of the outer tub would be close to $200. You could have a potential repair cost of as much as $400. Based on the age of this washer, you may consider replacing it instead of repairing it if you suspect that the rear tub/bearing will need to be replaced.

If you find no apparent problems with the spin basket then you could have a bad spin bearing. There is a possibility that you have an item stuck between the spin basket and the tub but this type of item would normally make noise while the washer is tumbling as well as spinning. If you still suspect that you have an item between the basket and the tub, you can unplug the washer and use the information shown in the first image below to access the hose between the outer tub and the drain pump. If you pull of that hose from the bottom of the outer tub, you can check for an item in this manner. I provided the basic procedure for removing the spin basket on this type of washer but I do not recommend that you attempt this procedure yourself. The illustrated procedure makes the process look easy but it is not that simple. Be sure that you unplug the washer and shut off the water supply before accessing internal components.

This information should help you resolve your washer problem. If you need more help, submit additional details and we will assist you further.

I agree that you will probably need to replace the washer soon. There has been some recent innovations introduced in the front load washers. A direct drive motor is used on many of the current models. The rotor of the motor is directly attached to the shaft of the spin basket. This helps avoid the spin bearing problems that you are likely encountering. I added some Sears.com links for some of these direct drive models below. The Samsung model is only $460 right now. Sunday will be a Friends and Family night at your local Sears. You may want to take advantage of the extra discount offered at that event. The pricing on the washers shown below is very reasonable.

Q:

how to replace the EOC in my Kenmore range.

A:

Thank you for your question on the installation of the EOC.

It should be that same as the original.

This model looks like a duel fuel range with gas on the top and an electric oven.

What part number did you order and what part number did you receive?

We need to make sure we have the correct board before we continue to troubleshoot and install the EOC control.

Please let me know what you have and I will be happy to help you.

I am sorry but I do not have access to the order numbers to see what you ordered and received.

Sam A.
