Question and Answers

Q:

Freezer freezes up

A:

I added some technical information in the images below that may help you (or you and your friend) further diagnose this problem in your refrigerator. The first image shows how to place the control in a Forced Defrost mode. That will often help you determine whether the defrost heater is working.

If not, you can use the information in the second image to check that defrost heater. You should measure around 29.3 ohms (+/- 7%) through the orange and white wires on the control board (or directly at the heater if that is where you are measuring it). You should measure the same resistance through the brown and white wires (the white wire is traced in hot pink on that diagram). If the heater is okay but that defrost bi-metal thermostat is "open" (measure OL -- open load or infinite resistance) then that thermostat will need to be replaced. Note: The defrost termination thermostat will normally be "open" if the temperature in that area of the evaporator is above 42 degrees F). If the heater is bad, then that heater will need to be replaced. You can order parts from this page: Maytag Refrigerator Model PSD267LHES Parts . Be sure that you unplug the refrigerator before accessing internal components and replacing parts.

If you need more help, reply with additional details and we will assist you further.

If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link: Sears Home Services .
