Thank you for contacting Sears with your question about the fuse blowing out on your Poulan lawn tractor. I am so sorry to hear that is happening. I know how frustrating it is to try and mow the lawn just to find out the tractor isn't working. I will be happy to assist you with this. First, I recommend you verify you have replaced the fuse with the manufacturer's replacement part. I have included that link for you.

Fuse for Poulan tractor model PR185H42STA.

There are a couple of different senarios that could apply to the issue you are having with the tractor. so I will address both of them. If the fuse blows as soon as you turn the key on, I recommend disconnecting the main plug from the engine. This plug has about 6 wires going to it. Once the plug is disconnected, replace the fuse and turn the key on. If the fuse blows, the problem is in the tractor harness. If the fuse does not blow, I suspect the problem is in the engine harness. if this is an engine harness problem disconnect all the wires on the engine then plug the main harness in. Plug each wire back onto the engine one at a time. When the fuse blows, the problem is with the last component plugged in. I recommend labelling the wires or taking a photo of them before you begin disconnecting them. It will serve as a guide as you start plugging wires back into place.

If the fuse blows when the clutch (also called interlock) switch is engaged, then I recommend you locate the plug that joins the clutch harness and the tractor harness. Unplug the clutch harness from the tractor harness and then start the engine and engage the clutch switch. If the fuse blows then there is a problem with the harness or the switch.

I have included the links for the tractor harness and the clutch switch I mentioned so that once you determine the problem, you will be able to order the parts you need.

Unfortunately Poulan does not put the complete engine model number in the Owner's Manual. You will need to verify the complete number off of the engine itself. It will start with 407777. You will also need the type and code which will be in the format of xxxx-xx (can be all numbers or a combination of letters and numbers). With the complete number, you will be able to pull up the parts list on our website. There you will be able to locate the engine wiring harness. If you need assistance, respond to this thread and I will be happy to look it up for you.

While you are completing your repairs, it is a good time to also complete your spring tune-up of the engine. I have included the link for the tune-up kit also.

Tune-up kit for Poulan tractor model PR185H42STA.

I hope this helps. If I can be of further assistance, please respond to this thread. Thank you for choosing Sears, we appreciate your business.

You should begin by removing the deck from the tractor.

  • Remove the belts and the mandrel guards from the deck.

  • Block the blade with a strong piece of wood so it can't turn and remove the nut on the mandrel pulley. This is difficult to do without an impact driver. Don't hold the blade with your hand you might get cut. Use an impact driver to remove this nut and the blade bolt if possible.

  • Turn the deck over and use the wood to block the blade and remove the bolt holding the blade to the mandrel shaft and remove the blade.

  • Remove the pulley and the washer from the top side of the mandrel. Use a block of wood and a hammer to drive the mandrel shaft out of the bottom of the housing. The top bearing can be removed by a using a 12 inch broom handle and a hammer. Place the broom handle against the bottom of the bearing and tap it out the top.

  • Drive the upper bearing into the mandrel housing using a piece of wood on the bearing and tapping the wood with a hammer. The lower bearing is on the jackshaft and will go into the housing when you tighten the nut on the pulley.

Reassemble the blades and mandrel cover and reinstall the deck under the tractor.

The part number for the mandrel is 137646 and can be ordered from the following link. Mandrel
