Hello glad to help.  Thank You for choosing Sears

I am sorry and do understand your frustration when you are having trouble with your gas Maytag dryer.

Looking at the model MDG4000BWQ.   May I ask when starting the dryer is there the clicking noise.   Is it igniting?   Secondly if it is and the valve cutting on and off it will be the coils.   You have 2 coils in there that keeps the fires burning.

I have included a link to our PartsDirect page where you can purchase the part you need to complete your repair. Just click the blue link below to be taken to the page.

If you have further questions please let me know.
Thanks for choosing Sears

How do I replace the drum belt and support rollers on my Maytag dryer?

The replacement of the belt and support rollers will involve an extensive teardown of this dryer. Carefully read the procedure. You can view a diagram of the dryer parts on the Sears PartsDirect website. Click the "Parts" link from and key your model number into the search field to access the parts diagram.

I recommend reading the entire process. Proceed with this teardown only if you are completely confident that you can safely complete the repair. CAUTION: Internal metal edges in the dryer can be sharp. Protective gloves are recommended for this repair.

Here is the procedure to replace the belt and support rollers:

  1. Unplug the dryer to completely disconnect electrical power.
  2. Open the front door and remove the four screws along the inside lip of the door opening. Two are located vertically on either side of the door opening. These screws secure the front panel to the front shroud assembly.
  3. The front panel is held to the cabinet by means of clips secured to the front shroud. Small slots in the front panel engage the clips and hold the front panel in place. To remove the front panel, grasp the goal posts of the front panel 3/4 of the way down and pull the front panel away from the dryer.
  4. Tilt the top of the front panel away from the dryer and lift the panel off two clips retaining the front panel to the base frame. Set the front panel away from the machine.
  5. Locate and remove two 5/16" hex head screws securing the two hold down brackets for the top cover.
  6. To remove the hold down brackets, swing the bracket to the outside and unhook the bracket from the slot in the top cover lip. Lift the front of the top cover tilt the top cover toward the rear of the machine.
  7. Remove the wires from the door switch assembly, sensor bar and lamp holder. Unsnap the lamp holder wire harness from the front shroud wire retaining clip.
  8. Remove four outer perimeter screws holding the shroud and front tumbler assembly to the cabinet. NOTE: Remove the lowest outside screw at each corner and then the top screw on each side. Leave the four inner screws in place.
  9. Pull the shroud and tumbler front assembly out and away from the tumbler. NOTE: When reinstalling the shroud and tumbler front assembly, lift the front inner edge of the tumbler to allow the front of the tumbler to rest on the Teflon bearings on the shroud and tumbler front assembly. Also, check the front felt seal to insure that the felt seal is outside the lip of the tumbler.
  10. Sit or kneel near the front of the dryer. Insert your left hand along the side of the tumbler at the 8 o'clock position. Insert your right arm under the tumbler as close to the blower as possible. Grasp the idler pulley with your left hand and pull it upward and to the left. Slip the belt off the back of the motor pulley with your right hand.

Using this procedure, you should now be able to pull the tumbler out of the cabinet. You will now have access to the support rollers. Make sure that they are a source of your noise before changing them. Reverse the procedure for reassembly.

This is a complicated repair. If you need more help, resubmit your question with additional details or call a service technician to complete the procedure.
