Q:

Sears sent variant MCU for Kenmore washer

A:

It sounds like you were shipped the wrong motor control board. I recommend that you return that motor control board and reorder it. I provided a picture of that repair part number 8181693 in the image below. It does not substitute to a new part number so your replacement control board should look like the original one that you pulled out of the washer (also like the one in the image below). Here is a direct link to the Sears PartsDirect.com part 8181693: Microcomputer .

I recommend that you contact Sears PartsDirect.com and arrange the return of that incorrect part. According to your description, that is not the correct control board. If you need more help, reply with additional details and we should be able to assist you further.

Thanks for checking that part number and the model number. That washer and those parts are manufactured by Whirlpool (for Kenmore). I will check with the manufacturer regarding this control board variance. They may have a solution that will help.

A digital picture would help. Here is a suggestion regarding the size restriction that we use: Display the picture on your monitor and then hit the Print Screen button on the top right portion of the keyboard. This will copy an image of the entire monitor screen. Paste that Print Screen image into Paint or a similar type of photo editor (such as Snagit). You can crop out the browser and other surrounding parts of the screen to just leave the image. You can then save that smaller photo as a JPEG or GIF format image that you can load into a reply (PNG also works). Another method would be to use the settings on your camera to reduce the photo size. I hope that these tips help. If you need to return that part to Sears PartsDirect, we should be able to help you with that if necessary. I do not have a reply from the manufacturer yet but I will update this thread as soon as I receive that information.

Okay. I heard from the manufacturer. The motor control unit 8181693 should look like the one shown in that image that I provided above according to the manufacturer representative. There have been no changes to that control board. To fix this problem, you will probably need to return that refurbished control board and order a new one that has that plastic cover included. There is a possibility that the control board was replaced with a different part in that washer during a previous service repair. The manufacturer cannot explain the variance. I hope that this information helps. If you need more assistance, reply with additional details.

You may not have seen the above reply from the manufacturer since it went to the second page of this thread. The manufacturer cannot explain the variance that you are describing. They recommend that you return that refurbished control board and order a new one that has the plastic cover included. According to the manufacturer, this should fix that problem. If you need more help, let me know.

Q:

Kenmore HE5t Dryer Does Not Heat

A:

Thanks for providing all of those details. Your final detail seems to indicate that the igniter is not glowing at all. The fact that the gas valve coils seem to be heating up implies that the gas burner assembly is likely getting voltage. The first image below shows the theory of operation for the gas valve assembly. The resistance of the gas valve coils will normally increase when they are heated up. Assuming that the gas valve assembly is getting voltage, you could have a bad flame sensor that is preventing the igniter from glowing. The voltage path through the igniter is traced in red on the wiring diagram in the second image. If that flame sensor is "open", then the igniter will not glow. You could unplug the dryer and bypass that component by taping the wires that go to the flame sensor together with electrical tape. (You could also check it for continuity using a volt/ohm meter to test it.) Carefully check to see if the igniter glows with the flame sensor bypassed. (If you checked it with a volt/ohm meter and it is okay, then this component will not prevent the igniter from glowing.) If the igniter glows with the flame sensor bypassed then replacing that component may fix this problem. NOTE: The burner will not actually ignite with the flame sensor bypassed. The flame sensor has to "open" when the correct ignition temperature is sensed so that current will flow through the gas valve coils and the valves will open to light the burner.

NOTE: Be sure that you disconnect electrical power after performing the above test. Power should be disconnected from the dryer when accessing internal components. If power is needed for a brief test, it should be disconnected immediately following the test. Do not make contact with live wires or contacts inside the dryer when it is connected to electrical power.

If the flame sensor is okay and is not preventing your igniter from glowing, I recommend that you check the continuity through the high limit thermostat. The tech sheet does not mention that component but it could prevent the igniter from glowing. A wiring failure could also cause this problem.

I hope that these tips help. If you need more assistance, reply with additional details.

You seem to know how to order parts. They are available from the Sears PartsDirect website.

You seem to have technical expertise according to your details that you have been describing. If you get to a point where you need a technician to examine the dryer, you can schedule one through this link: Sears Home Services .
