Question and Answers

Q:

My Maytag washer model MAV8551aww is not spinning the clothes dry.

A:

Hi James,

Thank you for submitting a question to Manage My Life.

There is not a lot of difference between the two spin speeds on this washer, regular is approximately 620 RPMs and slow is approximately 410 RPMs. When we see wet clothes after the spin, the first things that need to be checked are:

  1. Check for unbalanced load.
  2. Check for slipping belt.
  3. Check for kinked tub to pump hose. Shorten hose by cutting 1/2 inch off each end of the hose. And then, re-secure hose ends with screw clamps.
  4. Check reference marks on drive pulley and cams.
  5. Check for partial engagement of the brake assembly.
  6. Check the drain pump for obstruction.
  7. Check the drain hose for restrictions.
  8. Check for drain plumbing restriction.

When the washer does not spin fast enough, check for:
  1. Broken or slipping belt.
  2. Does the house drain system accept water from machine?
  3. Blocked drain hose.
  4. Unbalanced load.
  5. Broken impeller on pump.
  6. Partial engagement of brake assembly.
  7. Binding in the motor glide area.
  8. Proper adjustment on thrust bearing.
  9. Obstruction between tubs.
  10. Binding tub seal.

This is an extremely difficult thing to diagnose in this particular washer. I highly recommend letting a service technician diagnose this washer.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website; Sears Home Services .

Q:

How do I remove the knob an dial plate from my Maytag Washer timer?

A:

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

First, pry the cap off from the front center of the timer knob and then look to see if the is a little clip over the shaft. If so, slide the clip off and then the knob can be removed. If you do not see a clip, access the back of the timer and look for any written instructions. You may have to remove timer knob from timer shaft by pulling the black plastic tab located on the back of timer outward to release knob, then remove timer knob skirt. NOTE: Disconnect the power cord from the power source before servicing.

I hope this is helpful. If I may be of further assistance as more details become available, please reply to this post.
