Question and Answers

Why won't the oven light even though the stove top burners work in my Whirlpool range model GS395LEGQ5?

This range does not use a glow bar igniter that many other manufacturers (and even Whirlpool) use. This range uses a spark ignition system. The images below provide extensive technical information on this system. The first image provides the theory of operation for this ignition system. Understanding the operation of this system is a vital key to diagnosing a failure. The testing of this system involves using a voltmeter to take live voltage checks. I do not normally recommend that you conduct these live voltage checks yourself unless you are completely confident in your technical ability to safely measure it. Checking live voltage with internal components exposed is extremely dangerous and can result in lethal electrical shock if you accidentally touch live contacts while they are energized.

The third image provides a wiring diagram of your specific range.

The top left corner provides a component check that you can conduct with the range unplugged. It is an ohm check of the gas solenoid valves. This is a component that is often overlooked by technicians when diagnosing a failure in this system. The oven will not ignite if one of the gas solenoid valves is open. This is a check that I recommend conducting before you consider other testing that involves live voltage checks.

This system is difficult to diagnose even by trained technicians. If you can safely make the checks described and need more help with diagnosis, resubmit your question with additional details and we will assist you further.
