Question and Answers

Why won't my dryer produce any heat?

If the dryer hasn't had the igniter replaced in it in the past few years there is a good possibility it has failed. The igniter must glow bright red in order for the gas valve to open. If you find that the igniter is glowing bright red and then fades back off most likely the magnetic solenoid coils mounted on top of the gas valve are weak or has failed.

Disconnect power to the dryer and carefully pull the dryer away from the wall and remove the inspection panel. Plug unit back in a start the dryer and watch to see if there is a bright red glowing light. Note: Do not stick your hand into the opening while plugged in and running. If it glows and goes off, most likely the solenoid coils will need to be replaced.

There are several other components which can fail and prevent the dryer from heating:

  • Timer
  • Control thermostat
  • High limit thermostat
  • Motor centrifugal switch
  • Gas valve assembly

I recommend calling a service technician to diagnose and repair your dryer.
