Q:

Kenmore 500

A:

I am not sure that I understand which hose that you want to remove. The fill hoses will be attached to the supply faucets and to the back of the washer with garden hose type fittings. These will just screw off. You may need to use channel lock pliers to break the hose fittings free. There are normally screens on the inlets to the mixing valve assembly for the washer. If the inlet screens are clogged with debris or deposits, I normally recommend that you replace the inlet water valve assembly instead of trying to remove and clean these screens. If debris makes it past these screens and into the solenoid water valves during cleaning, it could cause the solenoid water valve to stick open which would result in a flood of your laundry room.

The drain hose will sometimes have a lint filter attached to the end of it. This type of filter will sometimes be held on the end of the hose with a clamp. Loosen the clamp to remove this type of lint filter if this is the component that you are talking about.

If you need to remove the drain hose completely from this type of washer, you can unplug the washer and carefully tilt it backward to remove the drain hose that is attached to the pump at the very bottom of the washer. Make sure that the washer is stable when it is tilted backward to prevent it from falling.

If you need more help, reply with additional details about the filter hose that you are trying to remove and the full model number of your Kenmore 500 washer.

Q:

washer will not agitate

A:

Thank you for your question.

In the details of your questions, you did not state if the timer advances through the cycle and if the washer would spin. If the timer does not advance once the water turns off the problem is likely to be a defective water level switch. To check the water level switch you will need an insulated jumper wire. First, fill the washer up then unplug it. Next, open the console and locate the water level switch. Remove the wire connector and insert the jumper between violet and tan wires. Once the jumper is inserted, plug the washer in and turn it on. If it agitates, the problem is a pressure switch.

If the washer will not drain and spin when you turn the timer to a spin cycle the lid switch could be defective. The lid has to be closed for the motor to run and drain the washer. If the lid switch is faulty, it will act as if the lid is open. On this model, make sure the lid hinge screws are tight. If the screws are loose, the hinge might not activate the lid switch. A quick check you can do is to run a cycle with the lid switch jumped. If the washer operates, the lid switch needs to be replaced.

To jump the lid switch you need to unplug the washer and open the console. I have provided you with the instructions for opening the console below. Once you have the console open, locate the connector for the lid switch. Place an insulated jumper between the gray and tan wires. Not the green it is a ground and will cause a short. After inserting the jumper make sure it will not touch anything metal, plug the washer in. Then start the washer in a cycle, and let it go. If the washer completes the cycle, you need to replace the lid switch. Do not leave the jumper in while you are waiting for the part. The jumper is only of the test.

To you replace the lid switch you have to remove the cabinet of the washer. The instructions for that are also in the image below. Once the cabinet is removed you can take the screws out securing the lid switch and remove the harness from the clips along the underside of the cabinet. Then reinstall the lid switch in the reverse order. Before you reassemble the cabinet, please read the instructions for installing the cabinet provided in the image.

Q:

Why won't my Kenmore 500 washer drain?

A:

You did not indicate if the washer will operate during the agitation cycles or not. I will assume the washer will fill with water only and will not operate in the agitation cycles or in the drain and spin cycles.

If the lid is not shut or the lid is shut and the lid switch is not being fully depressed or if it's broken the motor is not going to operate at all. The lid switch makes and breaks the neutral circuit to the motor.

It the motor will no start at all in either cycle the likely cause is a broken lid switch or the lid switch is not closing when the lid is shut. You may have to adjust the hinge by bending it if the switch is not being fully depressed.

The lid switch is actuated by the left side lid hinge. To access the lid switch will require putting the console in the service position.

To place the console in the service position:

  1. Disconnect the power cord from the power source.
  2. Slip a putty knife under each end cap as shown in the second image I added below to release the clips.
  3. Raise each corner up while pushing inwards on each console clip.
  4. Once each end has been released, slide the console towards you and then pick it up and hinge it over the rear panel.
You will see the lid switch located on the left. (See images below for testing the lid switch)
