Q:

Cannot load cd into player

A:

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

I was not able to locate any information for "Fisher 996". I would have to assume this is not the model number but just the make of the unit.  I recommend taking the CD player in for repair. CD players to not make a good DIY repair. It could have a faulty control board or a faulty loading and loading motor. It could also have a broken linkage in the mechanism that opens and loads the CD.

Q:

Can one use a DVD in place of a CD for audio recordings?

A:

A CD player has a different type of laser that cannot pickup the smaller pits used on a DVD disk. This is why a standard CD player will not read a DVD disk. You drive might be different and may accommodate music DVDs with MP3 written on them, Or you may have a DVD-A player which was made for DVD audio disks. It is hard to tell you whether you can do what you want to do. I can only tell you why a standard CD cannot read DVD information.

Q:

What can cause a Denon 3 CD changer to display “Err?

A:

A CD player will usually show "Err" or some other indication that something is wrong. The most common error a CD player gets is that the laser cannot pick up information off the CD. I think that this error is probably related to the symptom of not being able to eject a CD or change to another. I do not know your particular model but an internet search with it might give you some other consumers who have had the same issue and a work around.
