Q:

Amana AK2H35W1 cooktop element light

A:

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern. I seen your added response and it should not hurt anything to continue using the cook top. It sounds like one of the burner switches shorted and caused the two contacts to weld shut which would close and open to turn the ON indicator on/off.

Based on your symptom and details one of the burner switches has stuck contact for the element "ON" light. The terminals on the infinite switches/burner switches are labeled with numbers and letters. There will likely be a terminal labeled "P" for pilot meaning the ON indicator light and when the burner switch it turned on; contact "P" and contact "terminal "L1" closes and completes the L1 voltage supply to the "ON" indicator light and it turns on. If contact P and L1 does not break/open, the light will remain on. The terminals could also be labeled 5 and 5A. If you disconnect power supply and then pull the wire off terminal "P" and then reapply power and the light stays off, that would be the faulty switch. NOTE: Be sure to disconnect the power supply from the cook top before servicing.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

I provided the wiring diagram for that cooktop in the first image below. The second image shows some basic disassembly procedures. Be sure that you shut off the house circuit breaker for the cooktop (or unplug the unit) before accessing internal components.

That contact is probably damaged or welded shut. It is not likely that you will be able to repair the switch. I recommend that you replace it.

Hello Mark. I did not find that exact switch through any of our parts vendors. There is a similar switch with the same part number but it has a source code from Maytag. I do not know if it is the same switch. Maytag purchased Amana after that range was manufactured. You can try ordering part 0307429 through the Sears PartsDirect.com system. Here is a link for that part: 10 Position Control Switch 0307429 .
