Question and Answers

Q:

Amana French Door AFD2535DEB Refrigerator ice maker won't eject ice at times.

A:

The motor might be failing on your icemaker, or the ice mold might have lime or calcium built up in it making the ice cubes not release.

When the ice freezes inside the mold of the icemaker letting the temperature of the mold get colder, the thermostat inside the icemaker closes. This turns on the motor and the mold heater inside the icemaker. The motor turns until the ejector fingers contact the frozen cubes in the mold. It stalls out and sets silently until the heater releases the ice from the mold. When the heater releases the cubes from the mold the motor starts turning and lifts the ice out of the mold and dumps the cubes into the ice bucket.

I think the groaning sound you hear is the small gears inside the icemaker motor slipping. They should not do this.

The motor is not a replaceable part. You will have to replace the complete icemaker. The part number of a replacement icemaker is 61005508 and the cost is around $120.00. You can order one from www.searspartsdirect.com

To replace the icemaker you will need to remove the drawer and baskets from the freezer and disconnect the power to the refrigerator.

Remove the 2 screws above the icemaker mold and pull the icemaker away from the freezer wall.

Disconnect the icemaker wires from the plug in the freezer wall and pull the icemaker forward to clear the fill tube. Remove the icemaker.

Q:

my amana AFD2535DEB side by side refrig is on cool in the frefrig the freezer is fine

A:

When the refrigerator is not cooling properly but the freezer is cooling fine, the problem is usually an airflow problem.

The cold air is produced inside the freezer. The fan at the rear of the freezer sends cold air up into the refrigerator. There is a damper control where the air comes up the back center of the refrigerator section. This damper opens when the refrigerator needs cool air and closes when the refrigerator is cold enough. This is greatly simplified but is basically how the refrigerator works.

If you want to try to repair the problem your self, remove the shelves in the refrigerator and remove the duct from the rear wall. Remove the drawers from the bottom of the refrigerator.

Inspect the damper for ice jamming the operation. Inspect the return air grill on the bottom rear left of the refrigerator. If this return air is restricted it will slow down the airflow into the refrigerator.

If the damper is closed and nothing is restricting it you need to replace the damper.

If you are not comfortable testing these items call 1-800-469-4663 or go to www.searshomeservices.com and schedule service for a Sears technician to diagnose and repair the problem.

Q:

Re-submission: Amana French Door AFD2535DEB Refrigerator ice maker won't eject ice at times.

A:

The ice cannot eject if the mold heater doesn't heat. The heater could be failing, but normally a heater either works or it doesn't. Heaters are almost never intermittent. You can feel the bottom of the icemaker and see if the heater is heating. Be careful, the heater gets hot enough to blister your fingers.

You can clean the mold by removing the icemaker from the freezer. I sent you instructions for removing the icemaker.

Take the icemaker to a sink and fill the mold with a mixture of vinegar and water. Don't immerse the front of the icemaker into the water. The mixture of vinegar and water will soften the calcium and you can scrub it off with a plastic scrubber.

You can't buy the heater for the icemaker, you have to replace the icemaker.
