Model #917385127 Craftsman walk behind lawnmower, gas

Question and Answers

Q:

I have a series 550 push mower model # 917385127.With a briggs and straton engine. It will not run

A:

It sounds like you are having a carburetor issue. The first thing is to make sure the fuel you are using is no more than 5 weeks old. Then try to push the primmer a few more times. Push the primer all the way in and release for 2 seconds then push again. Do that 8 times.

If that does not help there could be trash in the carburetor bowl or the jets could have some trash in them. I would recommend pulling of the float bowl and cleaning it with carb/choke cleaner. Also you'll want to spray up into the jets while you have it opened up.

I found a video that will instruct you on cleaning the carburetor. If you do not have carburetor cleaner it can be purchased from any auto parts store. In the video, the technician replaced the float bowl. You will only need to replace the bowl if you can not get it clean with carburetor cleaner and scrub pad. I recommend only replacing the gasket only if it is torn. Most of the time cleaning the main jet is all that has to be done.

Q:

mower cable won't pull

A:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the mower. I think the problem is you cannot pull the starter rope out. If this is what is going on I recommend removing the spark plug and see if you can pull the starter rope. If you still cannot pull the rope, tip the mower over onto its side with the air filter up. Then have someone hold the bail down while you try to turn the blade with gloved hands. If the blade will not turn, I suspect the engine is locked up. At that point, I recommend having a service technician diagnose the mower.
