Question and Answers

Why is my Craftsman self-propelled walk-behind mower model 917.377424 difficult to start for the first time?

A dirty spark plug can prevent the mower from starting. Remove the spark plug and check it. The image below shows the difference between a dirty spark plug and a clean spark plug. Clean or replace the spark plug if needed.

Make sure that the tank is filled with clean, fresh gas. If gas was left in the tank of the mower for over 30 days, it may need to be drained and replaced. Going forward, you should run the mower (or edger) until it is completely dry and dies out on the final use of the season. This will prevent bad gas from staying in the tank and corrupting the carburetor.

Check the air filter to see if it is dirty. A dirty or clogged air filter will prevent the engine from starting.

If these tips don't help, you could have a problem with the carburetor. I recommend that you take the mower in for service to correct a carburetor problem. Here is a link for the Sears Service website that has drop-off location information: Sears Home Services .
