Question and Answers

Belt adjustment on a rear drive 3 speed mower 917-377311? The self propelled just isn't propelling.

You can sometimes tighten the engagement of the control bar cable. Looking at the image below from the Sears PartsDirect site you can see the cable end shown as item 2.

On some handles there is more than one mounting point for that cable end and you can move the cable mount to a position further down the handle, which will tighten the engagement cable and should help.

If that does not help, or the cable can’t be tightened any further than it already is, you will likely need to replace the belt. The belt is designed to allow some slip to smooth engagement and prevent jerking as traction changes, so it may not take much visible wear for it too slip continuously.

If the belt is already new, you might have the wrong one or there might be some problem with the engagement cable, item 2, or the spring, item 37 in the third image below, that the cable works against to move the gearcase, item 36, into the belt to tighten it.
