Thank you for your question as to why the mower will start but keeps dieing.

Q:

while cutting grass the engine started running wide open but governor is hooked up 917377190 Craftsman Gas, walk behind lawnmower

A:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the mower. If the engine is running full speed, I recommend inspecting the carburetor linkage first.  Posted an image below that shows how the linkage should be connected. Just click on the image to enlarge it. Besides the linkage, be sure the spring is connected. This is the spring on the linage. If everything is connected the way it should be I recommend checking the governor adjustment. The image has the instructions for doing the governor adjustment. After making the adjustment, check the operation. If the engine still runs wide open, the problem is likely an internal problem.  To repair that you would need to disassemble the engine. If you would like to tackle this type of repair just let me know. I will be happy to give you the basic steps for an internal repair.

I hope this is helpful.

Thank you for using Manage my life.
