Model #917374540 Craftsman walk behind lawnmower, gas

Question and Answers

replacing drive cable in my 917374540 mower.

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the mower. I will be happy to assist you with replacing the cable. First, disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug. Then tip the mower on its side so the air filter is up. Then Use a pair of needle nose pliers to disconnect the cable end from the gearbox. Next, you have to look above the gearbox where the cable mounts to the mower housing. Once you find where the cable mounts use the needle nose to squeeze the two tabs on the mount. While squeezing the tabs, pull on the cable housing. It should come out of the housing. Then click on the second image for the instructions on removing the cable from the control. After you remove the cable from the control, fish the cable out of the cable clamp along the handle. Then reinstall the new cable in the reverse order.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

I am sorry you were having problems with the mower. Occasionally cables can break during normal operation. I know it is frustrating because they break when we need them most. I only know of one mower that had problems with a cable and that was for the blade engagement. If you would like to reply below with the model number, I will be happy to look up the service history on your model.

I am not sure what the sales person meant when they said, "Oh, I know exactly which part you are talking about". I know after you had explained the cable to me I would know exactly what part you needed. That is the only cable used to engage the drive.

It can be difficult to bring the mower in for repair. We do offer in home service to our customers that cannot or do not want to bring the mower in for service. There is a charge for this service but is available to you. When you call the 1-800-469-4663 they will be able to let you know what the cost is for that service.
Please reply below if you need further assistance or would like me to look up the service history. Thank you for using Manage my life.
