Question and Answers

Q:

craftsman lawn mower 917374411 wont start.

A:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry to hear you mower is giving you problems. Please use the following to help get this issue resolved.

  1. Make sure to use gas that is less than 5 weeks old. gas will start to break down and become less volatile. If the gas is old drain the tank with a turkey baster and refill with fresh fuel.
  2. Check the air filter and replace it if is not dry or clean.
  3. Prime the engine 5 times and try to start.

If the engine does not start, you need to determine what is causing the problem. The engine need three thing to start and they are fuel compression and spark. Use the following instructions to determine what is missing.

The first check is going to be if the engine is getting spark. Remove the spark plug from the engine and connect it to the spark plug wire. Use a pair of insulated pliers to the base of the spark plug against a metal part of the engine. Now have someone pull the starter rope or engage the starter if your engine has one. When the engine is turning over you should see the spark plug spark. If the plug does not spark, disconnect the spark plug and insert a screwdriver into the boot of the spark plug wire. Make sure to hold onto the handle of the screwdriver. Hold the metal portion of the screwdriver close to a bare metal part of the engine. Now turn the engine over again with the starter. If you see a spark, you need to replace the spark plug. If you do not see, a spark most likely the ignition coil is defective.

Once you have determined the engine has spark you have to check for fuel. The easiest way to check for a fuel problem is to remove the air filter and pour a few teaspoons of fuel into the throat of the carburetor. Then try to start the engine. If the engine acts as if it wants to start or runs for a short time and stalls the problem with the engine is a fuel issue. Most likely, the carburetor needs to be cleaned or replaced. To clean the carburetor you have to remove the float bowl and spray the passages with carburetor cleaner and compressed air. If you are not sure how to clean a carburetor, you can use the following link to a video I found on cleaning a carburetor. Carburetor cleaning I have given this link as a guide it might not be the same as yours. I found this link and we are not associated with this video. If cleaning the carburetor does not cure the problem, I recommend replacing it.

If the engine did not attempt to start with pouring the gas in the carburetor, I recommend checking the compression of the engine. To check the compression remove the spark plug and tuck the wire out of the way. Hold your finger over the spark plug hole and turn the engine over. When the engine turns over the compression should force air past your finger. If the engine does not force air out part your finger there is an internal engine problem. I recommend having a service technician diagnose the engine.

If you have verified all three this the engine need to run and it will not start I recommend that you have the mower serviced. I hope this is helpful. If you need further assistance, please submit more details.
