Question and Answers

I have a sears lawn mower model #917372281 and my pull cord broke when trying to start mower. I have enough cord left to re install to the mower. Please advise.

Thank you for your question on the repair of the starter rope on the mower.

You will need to remove the starter housing from the top of the mower. If this model has an extended rope start where the rope is held on the side of the mower handle you will need to purchase the correct length of rope so you will be able to put it back at that location.

The starter rope length is 96 inches by 9/64ths thick.

Starter rope for 917.372281 .

After removing the top starter rope housing from the engine you will need to turn it over and remove the old rope from the housing by pulling the rope out and cutting off the knot on the end of the rope in the rope pulley on the starter.

Once you have done this you will need to rotate and wind the pulley tension spring 5 full rotations and aligning the pulley rope hole with the hole on the outer housing.

Once you have the pulley spring wound then you may need to use a C clamp to hold the pulley while you install the new rope in through the rope housing and then the pulley hole and then tie a knot in the end of the rope and pull up against the inside hole of the pulley.

You can now release the C clamp that will holding the pulley spring recoil tension and it should pull most of the rope back onto the pulley. Then reinstall the starter back onto the housing in the same whole orientation that it was originally and pull the operator presence bar is down and pull the rope up to the retainer on the side of the handle.

I found a video that is not very professional but it should give you the general idea of how to repair the rope. Tecumseh starter rope repair video .

I hope this will help you.
