Model #917293483 Craftsman rear tine, gas tiller

Question and Answers

Q:

rear tine tiller will start but will not change gears model 917293483

A:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry that your rear tine tiller will not engage the gears.

Sometimes to get the transmission to shift you have to rock the tiller on its wheel to take the bind out of the shifter.

If you can start the engine but the shifter will not engage the gears, then it sounds like you have an internal gear box problem.

Is it that the shifter will not move from one position to another forward/reverse, or can you not move the shift lever at all into the drive positions?

If this is the first time using it this year check to see if the shifter shaft has not seized up on the top of the transmission. You may have to use some spray lubricant to loosen this up is this is the case.

I am going to assume you have had the belt cover off and the drive belt is in good condition and is on the drive pulley and with the idler pulley being able to tighten the belt correctly.

If there is not any problem on the outside drive system them we will have to assume the transmission is locked up and will need to be repaired.

Please let me know what you find and reply and I will be happy to help you further.

Q:

I needed to change my corroded gas line on my tiller model 917-293483. Now the choke does not function and the machine won't start. How do I properly repair the choke?

A:

Remove the air cleaner from the carburetor and watch the choke plate as you move the choke lever. You should see the choke plate close off the intake air when you move the lever to the choke position.

Disconnect the fuel line from the carburetor and be sure gas is flowing through the fuel line. Be sure the fuel shut off valve is turned on.
