Question and Answers

Can not shift gears on my sears garden tractor

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the tractor. I should be able to assist you with this shifting problem.

On the front of the transmission, on top, you will see a small plug (key#21). See image below for location of key #21.Use a screwdriver to remove the plug. Be careful doing that because there is a little spring (key#22) under it that is subject to jump out and get away. That would be a bad thing. When you have the plug out, drop several drops of oil down the hole. I prefer to use something my Marvel Mystery Oil for that, but you can use whatever light oil you have on hand. While the plug is still out, hold your finger over it and have someone move the shifter from gear to gear a few times. Then drop a little more oil down the hole. Put the plug back in. Move the gears some more. If you still have the problem, it may get better the more you move the shifter around. If it doesn't get any better or gets worse, then I'd say you have an internal shifting problem. That would be something you'd need a qualified technician to tend to. I have attached a drawing to use as a reference.
