Model #917287031 CRAFTSMAN lawn, tractor

Question and Answers

Q:

My tractor will not go into gear 917287031 Craftsman Tractor

A:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the tractor. A few things will cause the problem you are having. The first is a missing axle key. The axle key fits in the groove on the axle and rim to keep the wheel from spinning on the shaft. To check for missing axle keys, you need to remove the plastic cover in the center of each wheel. Then push the tractor forward and watch the end of the axle. The axle should turn the same direction as the wheel. If the axle turns the opposite direction, the key is missing.  The image below shows how the key fits into the wheel. If the key is in place on each wheel, I recommend checking the shifter. Have a helper move the shifter while you verify it is connected. If the shifter is connected, I suspect the problem is in the transaxle. The usual fix for the type of problem is to replace the transaxle.

Once you determine the problem, you can order the replacement parts from the following link. Replacement parts for a Craftsman tractor model 917287031.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Q:

craftsman riding mower 42 inch cut blades will not engage

A:

Park the mower on a level surface and engage the parking brake.

Lower the deck to the lowest setting and get someone to engage and disengage the mower while you watch the clutch cable and the idler bracket.

The spring on the end of the clutch cable attaches to the bolt that mounts the pulley to the idler bracket. When you move the engagement lever to the top the cable should pull the pulley tight against the belt to cause the blades to turn.

I feel sure you will find something broken or loose in this area.

You should be able to move the idler bracket by hand easily and make the deck belt tight.
