Model #917276641 Craftsman lawn, tractor

Question and Answers

Q:

My Model 917276641 Craftsman Tractor needs transaxle fluid.

A:

Park the tractor on a fairly level surface. Remove the left rear wheel to access the transaxle. On the top of the transaxle near the front is a pipe plug. Some of the pipe plugs are recessed and are removed with an allen wrench.

Remove the pipe plug and measure the distance from the top of the transaxle housing to the level of the oil. The oil should be 1 1/4- 1 1/2 inch from the top of the housing.

If you need fluid, use 20W50 motor oil.

You should pull the clutch pedal up with your toe and see if this increases the power of the transaxle. If it does, the spring on the idler pulley bracket might need to be relocated to pull the idler tighter on the belt.

Q:

gas leaks into crankaxse 917276641 Craftsman Tractor

A:

Thank you for your question.  I am sorry you are having a problem with the Craftsman tractor model number 917276641.  I will be happy to assist you with the repair. If the engine is over filled and smells like gas the problem is in the carburetor. The float, needle, and seat are not regulating the fuel level in the carburetor. When this happens, the gas will run into the cylinder and keep it from turning over. To cure the problem you will need to rebuild or replace the carburetor. If you rebuild the carburetor, be sure to back flush the fuel inlet. I have found a site that shows how to rebuild the carburetor. Click  here to be taken to that site.  I also recommend replacing the fuel line from the filter to the carburetor. I have seen the inside of the hose break down and cause the problem you are having.  After you have the carburetor taken care of, remove the spark plug, and turn the engine over by hand. This will remove any fuel left in the cylinder. Once you have the fuel cleared out leave the spark plug out and change the oil. Then refill the engine and reinstall the spark plug. Now check the operation of the tractor.  Please click on the following link if you need any parts for engine model 31P977-0670-E1  I hope this is helpful. Q:

How do you change the Drive belt for the Sears tractor

A:

Thank you for your question.

I should be able to help you with replacing the belts. If you do not have the belts yet you can order them from our parts website: Sears Parts Direct . Once you have the belts click on the image below. The image has the instructions for installing the belts. If you are going to just replace the drive belt, I recommend removing the mower deck. It will give you more access to the drive belt. If you follow the instructions, there is not much to go wrong.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

I am sorry you were linked to a wrong answer. I have looked up you model number and posted the instructions below. The most difficult step of replacing the belt is removing the blade adapter. If it does not slide off easily, I recommend soaking it with WD-40. Then let is sit for an hour. If it will not slide off after sitting tap the backside with a hammer. This usually helps. Please let me know if you need further assistance.
