Question and Answers

Q:

LT1000 tractor fuel leak 917276393

A:

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

Inside the fuel/float bowl under the carburetor is a float which is attached to a needle valve. When the fuel bowl fills with fuel, the float must rise and push the need valve up in order to seat up into the inlet seat to shut the fuel off. If the float is stuck or if the needle valve and seat is worn, it will cause the fuel to continue to gravity feed into the bowl which will overfill and eventually run into the cylinder.

I added a link to Briggs and Stratton web site which will have information and instructions for overhauling the carburetor.

I hope this is helpful. If I may be of further assistance as more details become available, please reply to this post.

Q:

Mower Won't Stay Running 917276393 Craftsman Tractor

A:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the tractor. Next time the engine starts to die, loosen the fuel cap for ten seconds. If the engine smoothes out, I recommend replacing the fuel cap. The fuel cap has a vent that should allow air to replace the used fuel. If the vent is plugged, fuel will eventually stop flowing from the tank. The fuel filter and the fuel pump if your tractor has one could also cause the same issue.

If you do not think fuel is not the problem, you have to determine if the engine has spark. To check the engine for spark remove the spark plug wire and insert a screwdriver into the boot. Make sure to hold the handle of the screwdriver and position the exposed metal portion of the screwdriver close to something metal on the engine. A bolt head will work well. Then try to start the engine. You should see a spark from the screwdriver to the bolt head. This mean the coil is good. If you do not see a spark most likely the coil need to be replaced. If you see a spark the problem is most likely fuel related.
