Question and Answers

how do you replace the spindle on a craftsman mower deck

Thank you for your question on replacing the spindle on the mower deck.

There are a couple of ways of doing this process.

You could remove the deck from the tractor or you can lift and support the tractor with the deck on and replace the spindle shaft that way.

I would suggest replacing the whole mandrel assembly.

The difference in cost is not that much. The spindle shaft is $30.56 and the whole mandrel is $51.44 and you will have all new bearings and housing.

Spindle for blade mandrel for 917.276102 .

Blade mandrel for mower deck 917.276102 .

You will need to remove the deck from the tractor as outlined in the tractors owner's manual and then remove the blade from the spindle by using a block of wood to against the underside of the mower deck to keep the blade from turning you will remove top pulley nut the pulley and the washer under the pulley first and then go under the deck and remove the blade bolt.

When you have the blade removed then reinstall by hand the spindle pulley nut and tap if down with a hammer to remove it from the mandrel.

The place the new spindle into the mandrel from the under side and up through the mandrel housing.

Then install the spacing washer the pulley and the nut and torque the nut to 45 to 55 Ft. pounds. This is also the torque requirements for the blade bolt.

If you install the whole mandrel you will also need to install the old blade and the pulley system.

I hope this will help.

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you did not get the templates with the part. I do not know if the manufacturer includes the templates with the parts any longer. I recommend calling the manufacturer to see if they can send the template. The number for them is 1-800-448-9282.

I hope this is helpful. If you need further assistance, please reply below with more details.
