Model #917274040 Craftsman lawn, tractor

Question and Answers

Q:

I have a 917274040 craftsman riding lawn

A:

Thank you for your question.

I'm sorry you are having a problem with the tractor. I will be happy to assist you in finding the problem. With the tractor turned off and the key removed, check all of the wire connection between the PTO switch and the clutch. If the connections are ok, you will need a voltmeter to do some voltage checks. If you have a meter, turn it to check DC volts. Then disconnect the wires going to the electric clutch. Now connect the meter leads to the wires on the tractor harness for the clutch. Then have a helper sit on the seat and turn the key to the on position. When you pull out on the PTO switch, you should have a 12-volt reading. If you have this reading, the problem is with the clutch. The image below will aid in diagnosing the clutch. If you do not have the 12 volts, the problem is likely a defective PTO switch. Just let me know and I can give you further checks to verify a failed switch.

I hope this is helpful.

Q:

Lawn tractor

A:

Thank you for your question.

Your Tractor uses an Operator Presence (seat) switch that will cause engine to stall if blades are engaged or the brake is released without anyone on the seat. If ample amount of weight is not kept on the seat during operation or the operator is leaning forward the tractor will stall because the Operator Presence (seat) switch senses that the operator is not completely on the seat.

To check Operator Presence (seat) switch:

  1. Lift seat.
  2. Locate wires that connect to Operator Presence (seat) switch under the seat.
  3. Disconnect and clean any debris in the switch connector. Use an ohmmeter to check the switch. When the switch is not pushed, the reading should be 0 ohms (closed). When pushed it should read ol ( open load )
  4. Make sure the connector is fully seated on the seat switch. The connector is a special connector that will short the two wires if it is not fully seated.

I hope this is helpful.

Q:

I purchased a used Craftsman riding lawnmower last year, need how to replace a drive belt for the transmission

A:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the tractor. I have looked up the model number you have submitted. The belt should be part number 140294 and can be ordered from our parts website: Sears Parts Direct .

I have provided you with an image below that shows how to replace the drive belt. I like to remove the mower deck when installing the drive belt because it gives you more room to work. In addition, when the mower deck is removed you can clean the under side easier. I hope this is helpful.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.
