Question and Answers

why doesn't mower deck engage when lever is in mowing position 917273500 Craftsman Lawn tractor

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

There is a bellcrank assembly on the mower deck which causes the blade belt to tighten when the lever is placed in the engaged position. I suspect the bellcrank assembly is not pivoting/moving in order to tighten the blade belt. Shut the mower off and then lower the deck and locate the bellcrank with pulley. See image below.  Clean all the grass debris from around the bellcrank where attaches to the deck. Spray some WD40 at the pivot point and then slide the blade engagement lever up and down several times. The bellcrank must pivot back and forth or the belt will not tighten up in order to tighten the blade belt and engage the blades. I added an image of the deck below. I circled the bellcrank assembly. The bellcrank must be able to pivot or it will not tighten the blade belt.

Check the things I have covered here and if I may be of further assistance as more details become available, please reply to this post.
