Question and Answers

Q:

917273398 not starting-worked fine- now it only starts when i pour gas on caberator.whats happening to my tractor?

A:

Thank you for your question as to why your tractor will not start without pouring gas in the throat of the carburetor.

Please check to see if you have fuel coming from the fuel tank to the bowl of the carburetor.

There should be a fuel filter in the fuel line between the fuel tank and the carburetor. Look to see if it has fuel in the bottom of it is it is translucent. Some you cannot see through and you cannot see into the filter.

Either the carburetor will need to be serviced and cleaned or the fuel shut off solenoid is the problem.

Please make sure the lead wire connection is on the fuel solenoid. When you turn the key on and off you should hear the plunger on the fuel shut off make a noise when it opens and closes.

Please use caution when around the exposed fuel and protect you skin and eyes with rubber gloves and safety glasses from getting raw fuel on them.

Take the fuel line off at the bottom of the carburetor to see if you have fresh fuel at that fitting. If you have fresh fuel at the bottom of the carburetor bowl then I would suspect that the fuel shut off solenoid on the bottom of the carburetor is not opening to let the fuel into the carburetor. Either it has failed or it is gummed up with fuel deposits.

I would suggest that you pinch off the fuel line and remove the carburetor bowl and clean the bowl and the plunger pin for the fuel shut off with some carburetor cleaner spray.

When the engine sits with fuel in it for an extended period of time the gums in the fuel with make the solenoid plunger stick and the plunger will not open the fuel port to let fuel into the carburetor.

You may need to replace the fuel solenoid if you cannot get it clean. There is a possibility of two different styles on this engine. The NIKKI branded carburetor requires a different solenoid than the Briggs carburetor.
