Model #917273130 Craftsman lawn, tractor

Question and Answers

Q:

my crasftman mower will not go into gear and brakes/clutch does not work

A:

Thank you for your question.

I will be happy to assist you with the tractor. Usually when this happens it is one of two problems. First is the axle key. If you have removed the rear tire, and it did not work after the repair, the axle key is likely missing. The image below shows where the axle key should go. If the key is in place the problem is likely a defective transaxle. To be sure, set the parking break and move the shifter to first gear. Then try to push the tractor. If the tractor moves, I suspect the transaxle has a broken gear.

I hope this is helpful. Please feel free to reply below with more details if you need further assistance.

Q:

I have a model # 917-273130 tractor

A:

Thank you for the question.

I will be happy to assist you. I have looked up the model numbers you have submitted.

  1. I looked at the transaxle and it should be sealed. Even though it is seal, I am not sure it is waterproof. To see if there is water in the transaxle you will need to remove the mower deck. Then locate the oil fill plug on the top of the transaxle. Once it is removed use something into the fill hole to check the level. If it is over half full, there is water in the transaxle. To drain the transaxle you will need to remove the transaxle and tip it over. After it is drained, fill it half full of 80W90 oil. The transaxle does not have a filter.
  2. The deck belt is 1/2 x 951/2 and the ground drive belt is 1/2 x 95. The parts can be ordered from our parts website: Sears Parts Direct .

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

If you find that the transaxle is over half full, you will need to remove the transaxle from the tractor. Then tip the transaxle over to drain it. You cannot just tip the tractor to drain the transaxle. If you did, it could harm the engine. Another option is to vacuum the oil out of the transaxle. If you have a tube small enough to fit into the fill hole, insert the tube and use a suction pump to remove the oil and water. I have seen these pumps in most automotive parts stores. Some are made for brakes and have a small reservoir. It will work you just have to empty it more often. I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

The tractor has a total of four grease fittings, two on each side of the axle, and two on the inside of the front rims. Other than that, there are no grease fittings on the tractor. The pivot points can be lubed with a dry lubricant. (i.e. graphite)

Q:

The riding mower is leaking gas from the muffler. It is a model 917-273130. What causes this?

A:

It sounds like the float in the carburetor is not turning the fuel off. The excess fuel will go into the engine and dilute the oil and run out through the muffler. Your carburetor has a fuel shut off solenoid that must not be working either.

To check this check your oil and see if it is over filled and diluted. Don't run the engine with this condition or internal damage will occur.
