Question and Answers

Replaced mower blades and deck mandrels on a Craftsman mower tractor, blades and belt will not turn anymore

Thank you for your question.I am sorry you are having a problem with your Craftsman tractor model 917271833. Based on the symptoms you are having I recommend trying to turn the blades with a gloved hand and the engine off. If the blades are jammed or turn really hard I recommend checking for the washer between the mandrel pulley and the top mandrel bearing. If the washer is missing, it will cause the mandrel pulley to bind on the mandrel housing. If the blades do turn, I recommend checking the belt routing. Often times I see the belt is installed on the wrong side of the mandrel pulleys. Each pulley has a brake arm. If the belt is over the brake are the belt will begin to shred as soon as you engage the blades. If the belt is routed correctly, move the engagement lever up with the engine off. Then check the tension of the belt. If the belt seems loose, check the idler arm pivot. If the pivot is rusted, the idler may not move enough to tighten the belt. If this is the problem, soak the pivot bolt with WD-40 and work the idler arm by hand. Once it is free check the operation.  If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a  Sears technician.  Here is a link for the website:  Sears Home Services.  I hope this is helpful.
