Question and Answers

Q:

My Craftsman tractor mod 917271050 will only start when jumped. The battery was replaced. There is no alternator on the Sears part list. What do we need to replace specifically to get the engine going without having to jump start it every time we mow the lawn?

A:

The stator is listed in the engine parts for your tractor. You can see the stator by going to www.searspartsdirect.com and entering the model number of the engine.

Our information indicates the engine model on your tractor is CV15S-41567. Look on your engine and confirm this model. If this engine model is correct the stator part number is 12-085-08-S, and the cost is around $45.00.

The stator is located under the flywheel of the engine. You will need to remove the blower housing and pull the flywheel to replace it.

I recommend you check the stator before going to that cost and trouble. On the operator presence relay number 3 there are 2 red wires. On one red wire you should read the battery voltage between the red wire and ground. On the other red wire and ground you will read the alternator output with the engine running at full throttle. If the alternator is good you should read 13-14 volts dc.

Your problem could be in this relay, the ignition switch, or a wire connection.

The owners manual has a wiring schematic of the tractor so you can trace the wiring.
