Model #917270940 Craftsman lawn, tractor

Question and Answers

Q:

Will snowblower 48624840 fit tractor 917270940?

A:

The current manuals show tractor model 917.270940 uses snow thrower 486.24838.

I looked in some older manuals and they show tractor 917.270940 uses snow thrower 486.24840.

The major difference is the 24838 snowthrower is 42 inches wide. The 24840 snow thrower is 40 inches wide.

I think the 24840 snow thrower will mount and operate on tractor model 917.270940.

Q:

craftsman 917270940 drive belt smoking

A:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the tractor. If the ground drive belt is smoking, I recommend checking the brake return spring. The spring should pull the belt tight when the brake is released. If the belt is not tight is will slip and eventually start to smoke. If the spring is ok, I recommend checking the belt. The belt should be burnt if it was smoking. If the drive belt is burnt, check all of the idler pulleys. The bearings in the pulley might be heating up and stopping the pulley. If any of the pulleys feel rough, I recommend replacing it.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Q:

clear fuel line

A:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the tractor. If the fuel lines of the tractor are plugged, I recommend replacing them. This is the easiest and safest. Now that the fuel has been changed to contain ethanol we see more of this happening. What happens is the inside of the fuel line breaks down and small parts of the hose eventually plug the hose. If you just clear the plug with compressed air, it is only a mater of time before it plugs again. To replace the hose you will need to estimate the length of hose needed and add at least a foot to that. Then purchase 1/4 inch fuel line from your local auto store. Once you have the hose and are ready to install it I recommend removing the mower deck. It makes it easer to route the fuel line. Then use a turkey baster to remove as much of the fuel out of the tank as you can. Now remove the old fuel line from the tank and quickly install the new line. This will limit the amount of fuel spilled. Then tie the end of the hose high enough the fuel does not leak out. Remove the old fuel line, route the fuel line in the same manner, and secure the connections with clamps.

I hope this is helpful.

Please let me know if you need further assistance on the repair of the tractor.

Thank you for the reply. The fuel pump is located on the carburetor on your engine. To determine what the problem is you need to remove the fuel line from the fuel pump. Then lower it so that it is below the outlet of the fuel tank. You might have to remove the fuel line clamp on the engine to get it low enough. Lower the fuel line into an approved container. Of you have a good flow of fuel out of the hose the problem is most likely the pump. The fuel pump should have a second line connecting to the engine. I recommend checking that line for cracks. If it looks bad, you should replace it. This line pulses vacuum to operate the pump. If the line looks ok, I recommend rebuilding or replacing the complete carburetor. To rebuild the carburetor you need to disassemble the carburetor and clean the passages with carburetor cleaner and replace parts that come in the kit. I have provided you with an image below showing the parts of the carburetor. I have boxed the pump in blue. The part number for the rebuilt kit is 694056 and can be ordered from Sears parts direct. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

The image has to be formatted as a Jpeg, Gif, or Png. The image has to be saved to your computer. You can not copy and paste directly to the site. I have found that you have to attach the image before you post the response. Then post the response with in a few minutes. I have found if I write the response in word then it is backed up if some thing happens. Kevin, let me know if this works better. We are using the same interface to post responses.

Just make sure to have what ever you type backed up. There has been a glitch that will erase your post if you try to add the image last. The web designers are working on this problem.
