Model #917270820 CRAFTSMAN lawn, tractor

Question and Answers

I need directions on removing the fuel tank on a model# 917-270820

Thank you for your question.

To replace the fuel tank you will have to remove the rear fender assembly. I have provided you with an image below that I have added arrows. The arrows are showing the location of the six bolts that have to be removed to lift the fender. Once the bolts are removed, unscrew the shifter handle. The seat and bracket should be able to stay connected to the fender assembly. Once you have all the bolts removed you need to unplug the seat switch harness then you should be able to lift the fender assembly off the tractor. You will be looking down at the fuel tank once the fender is out of the way. There is a metal bracket that goes across the fuel tank and it will need to come off. After that, the tank is just sitting there. The line connects up on the right side of the tank. Take the line loose and the tank will be free of the machine at that point. Remember to work in a well ventilated area and use caution when working around fuel. To install the next one just reverse the process and you should be in good shape.

Lawn tractor model #917270820 will start and run until clutch is released or deck is engaged. How do I correct this problem?

The connector on your seat switch has a switch built inside it. When the connector is removed from the seat switch it closes a circuit that grounds out the ignition module and kills the engine. When the brake is on and the deck is not engaged the operator presence switches open a circuit and prevents this from happening.

Something is wrong in the seat switch or the seat switch connector that causes the problem you have. Make sure the connector is on the seat switch securely.

If the connector is on the seat switch securely, either the seat switch or the connector might be shorted internally. You need a meter to test this.

If the seat switch connector is bad you can order just the connector. The part number for the seat switch connector is 148706, and the cost is around $6.00.
