Question and Answers

Q:

The battery on my Craftsman lawn tractor, model 917-257281, will not charge. We replaced the battery cables. Does it have an alternator or something else to charge the battery?

A:

The engine on your tractor has an alternator to charge the battery. It also has a diode control the voltage to the battery.

Follow the red wire from the ignition switch to the engine. Be sure it is not pinched or damaged.

Disconnect the wire connector at the engine. Crank the engine and read the voltage between the red wire and a good ground. Make this test with the engine running at full speed. You should read 14 volts dc on the red wire. If you don't have the voltage, the alternator and diode should be replaced.

The alternator and diode come together as one part. The alternator is located under the flywheel of the engine. The flywheel will have to be removed to access the alternator.
