Question and Answers

Why won't my Kenmore electric range reach the set temperature?

The likely failure is:

  1. Bake element
  2. Loose or burnt wire connection at the bake element or at the oven control board.
  3. Failed oven control board

I added an image below with the wiring diagram and the theory of Bake operation.

  1. Remove power to the range by turning both breakers off dedicated for the range.
  2. Visually inspect the bake element for any abnormal blisters or burnt spots on the bake element.
  3. If there is no visual signs of a burnt out bake element remove the bake element and test the bake element with an ohm meter. It should measure 21.4 ohms of resistance.
  4. If the bake element shows no continuity the bake element is burnt out and it will need to be replaced.
  5. If the bake element has 21.4 ohms of resistance the bake element is OK and then voltage will need tested at the bake element leads. NOTE: Do not check for voltage unless you feel safe and confident in doing so and you have some knowledge of electricity
  6. If there is no voltage to the bake element when set to bake and power is restored the likely failure is the oven control board.

I recommend calling a service technician to diagnose and repair you range.
