Question and Answers

Q:

Kenmore Elite model#79577569600 - getting Err IF code. The top portion (fridge) isn't working nor is the ice/water dispensers. Pls help! I've checked the fan

A:

The Er IF error code indicates that main control board detects that the ice compartment cooling fan is not working. This will cause a lack of cooling in the ice compartment and will normally result in no ice production. This is something that a service technician will usually need to correct. If you are advanced in technical skills, you may be able to correct this problem yourself. It will require the removal of the inside back panel of the freezer compartment. This is not an easy task. I recommend that you review the procedure for this task that is shown in the image below. Make sure that you are able to safely perform the tasks described before proceeding with this repair. Unplug the refrigerator to disconnect electrical power before accessing internal components. Once you access the ice fan, you may find excessive frost in this area and on the evaporator that could be causing your cooling problem and fan problem. If you defrost this area, you may find that you do not need to replace parts. If you find no excessive frost or the Er IF error code resumes after removing any frost then you will likely need to replace the ice fan (part 5209JA1044A). You can order this part from the Sears PartsDirect website.

You indicated that you checked the fan. If this is not the fan that you checked then you will need to check the ice compartment fan.

The ice maker may begin producing ice after resolving the problem with the ice compartment fan. This will not likely resolve a problem with the ice and water dispenser. A control board in the dispenser controls the components in this area. I provided the procedures for accessing the dispenser control board in the second image below. If you unplug the refrigerator, you can use these procedures to access and check the wiring on the dispenser components. If you are advanced in technical skills, you can use the wiring diagram shown in the first image to check the circuits.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

Q:

What does "IF" error code indicate?

A:

The error code "IF" indicates that the control board does not see the ice maker fan motor running. If the control board does not receive a signal from the fan motor for more than 115 seconds of fan motor operation "IF" will display, however it should not cause the fresh food section to warm up. You may have a control board problem or loose connections causing the warm temperatures.

Moisture has been known in some environments to migrate into the fan grill assembly and freeze and cause the ice maker fan motor to not be able to run and cause the "ER-IF" to display.

This type of failure will require a service technician to repair your refrigerator.

Q:

lights

A:

That link for a previous answer that Aashe provided describes a known issue with the interior refrigerator lights staying on in this type of Kenmore Elite refrigerator. Your model number indicates that it fits that same scenario if the serial number is below 704KR . . . A description of the serial number format is shown below. The 704KR . . . serial number indicates that the refrigerator was produced in April (4th month) of 2007. Refrigerators produced before that date (serial number 703KR . . . or 612KR . . . for example) should have an extended warranty to cover the repair of the interior refrigerator lights staying on (an any related damage due to that failure). If your refrigerator fits this scenario, I recommend that you schedule service through this Sears Service website: Sears Home Services . You may need to agree to pay for a service call or trip charge when you set up the service but that actual charge should be covered by the extended warranty so that you won't have to pay it.

If your serial number is above 704KR . . ., you will probably need to replace the control board on the back of the refrigerator. Reply with additional details if you need more help with this problem.
