Question and Answers

Q:

Dual Burner Element not working properly 7909621240B Kenmore Electric range

A:

That failure could be caused by a bad infinite burner switch or a failed element. See if the Element On light comes on when you turn the switch in the Single direction to use the inner burner element. If that Element On light turns on in that situation, then it is likely that the switch is okay. In that scenario, the element will probably need to be replaced. If the Element On light does not illuminate in that situation, then the burner switch will usually need to be replaced. This is not a fool-proof test but it can often indicate which component has failed (assuming that you do not have a wiring failure in that circuit).

If you want to check the components more thoroughly before ordering parts, then you can use the wiring diagram that I provided in the first image below. When the burner switch is set in the Single direction, you should measure continuity (near zero ohms of resistance) between the P2 and 4 contact on the burner switch. Be sure that you unplug the range to disconnect electrical power before accessing internal components. You can remove the upper back panel behind the console to access that burner switch. If the burner switch is okay, you can lift the cooktop and access the radiant element as shown in the second image. Check the wiring connections on that radiant element. You can pull it out and see if the ribbon element is damaged. If the element is bad, then it will need to be replaced.

You can order parts from this page: Kenmore Range Model 790.9621240B Parts . Be sure that you unplug the range before accessing internal components and replacing parts.

I hope that these tips help. If you need more assistance, reply with additional details.

Here are the images. Note: The circuits traced on the wiring diagram are not actual wire colors. (The wire going to the element on light should be purple but the other wires are probably different colors).

Q:

Kenmore oven not heating

A:

You could have a bad bake element or a wiring failure. A failed relay on the electronic oven control board could also cause this problem. I recommend that you unplug the range and check the resistance through the bake element using a volt/ohm meter before replacing it. You can access the leads on the back of the bake element from the back of the oven. Remove the lower back panel. Remove one wire from the element (with the range still unplugged). Measure the resistance through the element. You should measure between 10 and 30 ohms of resistance. If you measure Ol -- open load or infinite resistance then the element is bad and will need to be replaced. If the element is okay, I recommend that you reconnect the wire on the element and access the electronic oven control board in the console (with the range still unplugged). Remove the upper back panel to access the back of the control board. The wiring diagram for this portion of the range is shown in the image below. You can measure the resistance through the yellow and orange wires that connect to the control board to check the resistance through the wiring in the circuit. You should measure the same resistance as you measured through the element. If you do, then the control board will likely need to be replaced to fix this problem. If the circuit is "open" then you will need to fix a wiring failure in the bake element circuit.

These tips will likely help you fix this bake element problem in your range. If you need more help, submit additional details and we will assist you further.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .
