Question and Answers

Q:

ceramic top range

A:

Thank you for your question on water bath canning on the glass cook top.

I do not recommend using a heavy water bath canner on the glass top range.

The pan should not be more than 2 inches beyond the outer pattern of the burner face.

It will reflect too much heat back down into the glass and trip the high limit protector on the element thus loosing the steady heat you need for canning.

There are many people who this successfully but they run the risk of cracking the top.

It is up to you, but I would not recommend it.

Thank you for using Manage My Life.

Q:

ceramic cooktop range

A:

Thank you for your question on the canning issue.

The manufacture does not give a limit on the weight that the glass will hold. I have seen some say up to 45 pounds with out the heat.

I would suggest not going beyond 25 pounds of weight on the burner.

Eight quarts of liquid is 16 pounds by itself plus the cooker.

The problem with canning is the time and heat involved with the process.

I have used a 6 qt. pressure cooker on a glass range to make beans. The total weight was about 15 pounds total.

Thirteen inches is real close to the limit.

I would measure the burner cold so see if it will go beyond the limit in size.

If the bottom of the pan is no larger than 1 1/2 to 2 inches beyond the pattern on the burner it should be okay if it is not more than 25 pounds.

Again you are canning with your glass top at your own risk.

I think if possible I would suggest using a side burner on a gas BBQ grill if you have one. This will also have a weight limit for the support of the burner wing depending on the grill.

I did most of our canning last year on the grill burner and it also kept the heat outside.

I hope this information will help.
