Question and Answers

Q:

F1 code flashing on my Kenmore Oven. Oven will not shut off.

A:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having problems with your oven on this range.

• The F1 code usually means that the sensor in the oven has failed and you now have a runaway temperature situation, and you will have to disconnect the power to the range to prevent overheating and potential danger and warping the oven liner.

• Before we go into the repair you could try to remove the power to the range for 1 minute and then restore the power to see if the error code returns.

• You can check the sensor if you have a Volt/Ohm meter to check across the two terminals of the sensor.

A good sensor reads approximately 1100 ohms at 80 degrees or room temperature. If it is less than 500 ohms you will need to replace it.

• If you do not have an Ohm meter it may be easier to just replace the oven sensor. It is a fairly easy repair. And I believe you can do it yourself for less that $20.00.

• The part number for the oven temperature probe is: 316233902 and you can order this from Sears Parts Direct .

To start the replacement of the oven sensor:

• REMOVE POWER to the range.

• Open the oven door and locate the oven sensor in the upper left part of the oven cavity a few inches down from the oven ceiling. It will look like a pencil protruding from the back of the oven wall.

• Locate and remove the two screws that secure the sensor to the oven liner.

• Carefully pull on the sensor and work the plug in connector through the oven liner until you have enough wire to disconnect the plug. Note! If you cannot get the connector through the back wall, you will have to pull the range out and remove the lower panel to get to the connector.

• Disconnect the plug in connector. There is a lock clip on the side to press, to release the connector on some styles. Once disconnected, plug in new sensor and re-install to oven back wall.

• Re-connect power to the range and test operation.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

I hope this will help.

Q:

How do I open the top on a Sears electric range?

A:

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

Open the oven door and remove the screws along the front bottom of the top where it sits on the frame. Slide to top forwards just a little and you should be able lift the front up and then prop it up. I added an image below with the basic procedure of hinging the top open. NOTE: Disconnect the power cord from the power source before servicing.

I hope this is helpful. If I may be of further assistance as more details become available, please reply to this post.
