Question and Answers

Kenmore electric start gas oven turns on automatically and locks the controls and door.

The stove turning it self on and locking the controls is very concerning. I did some research on your model number but was not able to find information on resetting it. Your expert will be able to help answer your question. It may take two business days for your expert to reply. I do hope that everything works out on the stove. If you would like to look into Sears doing the repair here is a link for Sears Home Services. I do hope that everything works out.

Concerning in deed! Service is $200 to get someone to come here and just look at it. so I'll leave it unplugged until I can get an answer on how to make sure it's not auto cleaning or there's a way to reset it. Thanks. I'd just like to state on record that this is a safety issue that could lead to death, and I'm disappointing that something as potentially dangerous as a gas a stove/oven would only have a 1 year long warranty. Plus the lack of empathy from Sears dismays me considering millions of people may have the same issue and this model could have already caused fire or death. In closing an item that has a safety issue like this should be looked at for no charge regardless of warranty. For some reason the following movie quote comes to mind "Take the number of vehicles in the field, "a," multiply it by the probable rate of failure, "b," then multiply the result by the average out-of-court settlement, "c." "a" times "b" times "c" equals "x." If "x" is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one." -fight club I will take this to court if it burns my house down People are important, not profits, Jason

Hello Jason. I am sorry to hear about this dangerous problem that you are having with your Kenmore Gas Range Model 790.78532704.

Sears certainly takes every appliance failure seriously and constantly protects the safety of our customers. I have reported this failure to our product engineer for investigation and action.

Although we cannot directly address your warranty coverage and product satisfaction concerns through this website, we can provide you with detailed technical information that may help you fix this problem yourself and hopefully put your mind at ease regarding the safety of this range.

The method for resetting the control board is to unplug the range for at least 5 minutes. That will reboot the logic board and will restore default settings in most situations. Your details indicate that you have had the range unplugged for a while now. You can shut off the gas supply and see if the control still locks the door and starts the oven. If the control appears to be operating properly then you can restore the gas supply and continue to monitor the range for continued problems. I checked for any similar failures in this type and model of range. I did not find any similar failures at this time.

If you leave your home for an extended period of time, you will probably want to shut off the gas supply until you are confident that the random failure is no longer occurring.

This type of failure is caused by a failure of the electronic control board part 316418207 in the console of the range.  That electronic control board will normally need to be replaced to repair this failure. You will normally need to replace the overlay part 316419107 when replacing that control board.

If you want to replace that control board yourself, you can follow these steps:

  1. Unplug the range and shut off the gas supply.
  2. Move the range out of the counter to access the back panel behind the console,
  3. Remove the upper back panel behind the console.Note: Metal edges on the back panel are sharp. Protective gloves are recommended for this repair.
  4. Note the location of wires connected to the existing control board. (Take a digital picture to document the wire locations.)
  5. Remove the wires connected to the control board.
  6. Remove the screw that mount the existing control board in the console.
  7. Wear a grounding strap or ground yourself to the metal frame of the range to prevent static discharge damage to the new control board. Pull the new control board out of the package and attach the overlay to the front of the control board assembly.
  8. Mount the new control board in the console of the range.
  9. Properly connect the wires to the new control board.
  10. Reassemble the range.

I hope that this information helps. If you need to have a service technician examine and repair the range, you can schedule service online through this link: Sears Home Services Range Repair.
